Everyone loves a good movie – sitting back in your seat, taking in the action, and snacking on popcorn, and Edmonton has some great theatres too, from the vintage Garneau and Princess Cinemas to the adults-only, VIP experience in Windermere. Sometimes, though, you want to get a little closer to the action. Live-action plays provide an intimate, unique, and often spontaneous type of entertainment that can’t be found in a movie theatre. Luckily for Edmontonians, there are lots of opportunities to catch great live performances.

One such opportunity is Die-Nasty, a live improvised soap opera held at the Varscona Theatre on Monday nights. With a talented and hilarious cast, each season of the show features a different storyline. This season the cast is taking on Vikings, with each actor stepping into the shoes of Nordic heroes. There’s no formula here, just rapid-fire wit and plenty of surprises. At just $13 a show, it’s also affordable. Fans will also want to check out the Soap-a-Thon, a fundraiser held in September where actors perform over 50 hours of continuous improvisation. The troupe has won various comedy awards, and the show has been running for over 20 years – a testament to its excellence.

Those looking for something more serious might be interested in Shadow Theatre. They’ve been putting on productions since 1989, and usually operate out of Varscona Theatre. However, their current show, Becoming Sharp, is being put on at Backstage Theatre. A comic thriller that tells the story of a ghostwriter, the play features an experienced and talented cast and engaging story. Edmontonians can catch a show at 7:30 pm from Tuesday to Saturday, and at 2 pm on weekends at a discounted price. The show runs until May 17 – theatre enthusiasts won’t want to miss it!

While both Varscona and Backstage Theatres are found just off 104th Street and Whyte Avenue, which have no shortage of great restaurants, you might be looking to dine while you enjoy your entertainment. Luckily, Edmonton has two great dinner theatres – Mayfield Dinner Theatre and Jubilations. Anyone looking for a formal-but-fun experience should check out Mayfield, which runs every day of the week out of the Doubletree by Hilton Hotel on 109th Avenue. With a great buffet and a selection of five different shows, you’re sure to find something you like. For a more casual, intimate experience, Jubilations provides a great option. Operating out of West Edmonton Mall, audience members will enjoy an energetic show based around pop culture – not to mention a meal served by the cast members themselves!

Edmonton theatre is thriving, with opportunities for everyone to find a show they’ll enjoy. From the Varscona to West Edmonton Mall, be sure to check out some of the great entertainment being put on in Edmonton!
